How Do You File a FEMA / NFIP Flood Claim on Long Island?
Report the flood to your NFIP carrier right away, document all damage before cleanup, and submit a signed Proof of Loss within 60 days of the flood. FEMA disaster assistance is a separate application. Long Island Public Adjusters has 22+ years of experience preparing and negotiating NFIP flood claims across Nassau and Suffolk — call 516-410-0164 for a free flood claim review.
What to Do After Long Island Flooding
- 1Report the flood to your insurance carrier immediately and get a claim number
- 2Photograph and video every room, the waterline, and damaged items before cleanup
- 3Keep samples of flooring, carpet, and drywall; don't throw anything out until it's documented
- 4Dry out the property to prevent mold — NFIP expects reasonable steps to limit damage
- 5Submit a signed Proof of Loss within 60 days of the flood
- 6Apply separately for FEMA disaster assistance if a federal declaration covers your area
NFIP Flood Insurance vs. FEMA Disaster Assistance
NFIP flood claim
Paid under the flood policy you bought, through your "Write Your Own" carrier. Available for any covered flood — no disaster declaration needed. Strict 60-day Proof of Loss deadline.
FEMA Individual Assistance
Disaster-aid grants that only open after a federal disaster declaration. Won't duplicate what your flood policy pays, so file the insurance claim first and keep FEMA informed.

Where NFIP Claims Get Underpaid
NFIP adjusters work from a strict federal policy, and the most common shortfalls we see on Long Island are basement exclusions applied too broadly, missed hidden damage behind walls and under floors, contents lists that undervalue what was lost, and ICC benefits that are never raised at all.
If the carrier's number doesn't cover your repairs, you can submit a supplemental claim, file a written appeal with FEMA within 60 days of a written denial, or file suit in federal court within one year. See our flood damage claims, basement flood claims, and denied claim review pages for more.
