Does Insurance Cover Sinkhole & Ground Collapse Damage on Long Island?
Sometimes — and the cause decides it. New York policies usually exclude earth movement and settling, but most cover sudden and accidental water discharge and collapse from a covered peril, and many Long Island sinkholes actually start with a broken water main, failed sewer line, or collapsed cesspool or dry well. Long Island Public Adjusters investigates the true cause, documents the structural and contents damage, and challenges blanket earth-movement denials for Nassau and Suffolk County property owners. Coverage Turns on the Cause, Not the Hole
Carriers tend to look at a depression in the yard or a dropped slab and reach straight for the earth movement, subsidence, and settling exclusions. That is the wrong starting point on Long Island, where the void is very often the result of water escaping from a pipe or a failed underground structure.
If a sudden pipe failure, water main break, or covered collapse created the void, the resulting damage to the building, foundation, driveway, slab, and contents can be recoverable even though "sinkhole" appears nowhere in your policy.
We establish the sequence of events with engineering and plumbing evidence, then present the claim in the policy's own language rather than arguing about a label.
Common Long Island Causes
Damage We Document
Ground collapse rarely stays outside. We scope foundation and footing damage, slab and basement floor cracking, out-of-plumb walls, doors and windows that no longer close, plumbing and utility line separation, driveway and walkway failure, landscaping, and the engineering, soil compaction, and permitting costs needed to rebuild correctly.
If the property cannot be safely occupied, Additional Living Expense — or loss of rents on an investment property — belongs in the claim as well.
What to Do When the Ground Gives Way
- Keep people and vehicles away; barricade the area.
- Call the water authority or municipality if a main or sewer may be involved.
- Photograph and measure from a safe distance before anything is filled in.
- Report the loss to your insurer and note the date it appeared.
- Call us before backfill or repairs destroy the evidence of the cause.
Evidence That Wins These Claims
- Photos and video before backfill
- Plumbing or camera inspection of lines
- Water authority or municipal reports
- Engineer's cause-and-origin opinion
- Emergency shoring and barricade invoices
